Technology in Advertising and Public Relations has allowed for countless advancements in communication. Many of these advancements have come from the evolution of technology and its use in any way. Technology allows advertisements to reach millions of people within hours, even minutes. It also allows for the creation of new equipment and platforms to make advertising, influencing others, and innovation much more easy and efficient. Within my lifetime, technology has evolved in several ways. Internet used to be dial up – had to get off the phone to let your mom use the phone.
Growing up, the internet was almost completely irrelevant, only beginning to be relevant in the early 2000s. Before, we couldn’t even talk on the phone and be online at the same time. Now, you can use an online connection to call someone via video. How ironic, right?! One advancement in technology can provide improvements to hundreds of different types of technology which allows for the creative innovation to be never ending. Some positive outlooks on the evolution of technology is the ability it gives the “average person” to learn, teach, buy, sell, invent, and corroborate universally. Technology has also allowed for advancements in regulations and laws related to environmental change. The ability to measure and collect data on the ever-changing climate of the world will continue to provide scientists the things they need to change the world for the better.
However, many negative aspects have come along with the evolution of the technology. The ability to instill artificial intelligence (AI) into technology has proven to raise several questions about the future. Who will govern robots? Will they submit to humans or become assertive? No one knows at this time. In addition, the growing technology industry has provoked a world of people to compete. Competition in who has the best piece of equipment, or who gets the most likes. Both ends of the spectrum have derived from the evolution of technology.
As technology continues to change and make things easier for countless aspects of life, the way I see this effecting Advertising and Public Relations is huge. In my opinion, I see the future of Ad & PR being completely virtual. Whether it be out on the street or on your phone, I believe more and more advertisements will become interactive and allow customers to touch, smell, or even talk to props and signs to personalize the advertisement. Doing so will allow customers to be influenced not only when they’re watching TV or on their phone, but also while they’re walking down the street and through the park.
Technology has come so far, I would’ve never guessed the world we live in to be so reliant on technology. This can be good and bad, nonetheless, the fact is that technology will continue evolving and people must evolve with it.
